Langford: Demolish Boutwell and Grow Museum
Larry Langford is continuing on with his plans to revitalize Birmingham this week with a new idea that could drastically change the look of downtown. He is proposing to level Boutwell Auditorium, a mid-sized venue for concerts and other events, and giving the land to the Birmingham Museum of Art. Apparently the museum has had to put a great deal of their pieces in storage due to a lack of sufficient space. With the extra property the museum could be properly expanded.
” During a speech to the Rotary Club of Birmingham, Langford said the 83-year-old municipal auditorium costs the city $1.1 million a year for upkeep but produces only $200,000 in revenue from its use. … Langford mentioned several other possible initiatives … including a proposal to tear down Legion Field, talks with a developer to build a large mall in the city, and a move to bring bingo or a lottery to town to support health care.”
It seems the mayor is proceeding in his plans to bring a domed stadium to the city by removing some of Birmingham’s “dead weight”. While I’ve personally enjoyed many great concerts at Boutwell, losing nearly $1 million a year in maintenance costs really isn’t acceptable. Plus with the talks of tearing down Legion Field as well, we are certainly paving the way for the “New Legion Field” as Larry likes to call it.
