Quick Stats: PapaJohns.com Bowl

Last month Birmingham hosted it’s second PapaJohns.com Bowl game. Not only did this new bowl game signify the return of a NCAA Bowl to the city, but it also provided some pretty interesting statistics to math nerds and Dome proponents alike.

From Wikipedia:

“The Papajohns.com Bowl marked the return of post-season football to the city of Birmingham, which previously hosted the Dixie Bowl from 1947-1948, the Hall of Fame Classic from 1977-1985 (relocated to Tampa, FL and now named the Outback Bowl), and the All-American Bowl from 1986-1990 (canceled when the SEC awarded their championship game to the city).”

While this bowl was certainly not one of the top tier events of the season it did provide a satisfying turnout. In addition to putting Birmingham, AL on ESPN for a few hours on a Saturday afternoon, it also has brought in a growing attendance over the past two years. The first game, hosted in 2006, saw the South Florida Bulls face off against the East Carolina Pirates and an attendance of 32,023. The very next year saw in increase in that number to 35,258 as the Cincinnati Bearcats defeated the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.
